A Coast for Every Season
Aneast coast base from October to May; in the winter months the journey shifts tothe sheltered south and its own pair of championship courses
Mauritius rewards golfers in a way few islands can, and nowhere more than on the east coast, where four championship courses sit within half an hour of each other and one of them occupies an island of its own.
This journey is built around three rounds, played every other day. The days between belong to the lagoon, the mountains and the table, so a non playing partner has as full a week as the golfer. For parties who want golf every morning, the week reshapes easily.
You stay in one place throughout, minutes from your first tee, with no repacking and no long transfers. In the winter months, when the east coast takes the trade winds, the same week moves to the sheltered south, where the island's most decorated courses stand side by side. Knowing which coast in which month is the work, and it is ours.
Today begins with a familiar face at arrivals. Your driver leads you up the east coast, where the cane fields run down to a lagoon that holds four championship courses within half an hour of your door.
The afternoon is yours to settle in. The clubs can rest; the first tee time is tomorrow, and the evening asks nothing more of you than dinner and an early night.
This morning brings your first round, minutes from your resort, on a course laid between mountain and lagoon where the ocean stays in view for much of the play.
Your tee time, transfers and pairings are already in place, and the pace of the round is yours. The afternoon belongs to the pool or the beach, and the evening to a table already reserved.
The day moves from grass to water. A catamaran sails the east coast lagoon, pausing where the Grande Riviere Sud Est falls into the sea, and finding the sandbanks where the water is clearest.
There is swimming, grilled fish for lunch on board, and very little required of anyone. The evening returns you to the resort with salt in the air and your swing rested.
Today brings your second round, a few minutes along the coast, on a course that plays nothing like the first and asks different questions of your game.
The afternoon answers them with the spa, and dinner comes with the sound of the sea.
The day leads across the island and upwards, through the forested gorges of the Black River and out to viewpoints where the south coast lays itself out below.
At Chamarel the earth turns seven colours, and lunch is Creole cooking at a table looking down the valley to the sea. The drive home is slow, scenic and entirely handled.
No plans stand in the diary today, and that is deliberate. The pool, the beach and the spa are close at hand.
If the week has left you wanting one more round or one last sail, a word the evening before is enough.
The last morning keeps its own pace. Breakfast runs long, the sea is there if you want it, and your driver knows your flight time.
The clubs are packed, and the road to the airport follows the coast that opened the week.
