A catamaran day to Îlot Gabriel, Flat Island and Coin de Mire, with snorkelling over coral and, on the right days, whales beyond the reef.
The guided climb of Le Morne Brabant, kayaking to Île d'Ambre, and the quad tracks, ziplines and waterfalls of the Vallée des Couleurs.
Port Louis and its Central Market, Aapravasi Ghat, and street food eaten where the queue tells you to.
Trou aux Cerfs, the Seven Coloured Earths at Chamarel, and the viewpoints of the Black River Gorges.
Eight days across two coasts, north then south, with a private driver between them and knowledgeable local guides for every walk, climb and crossing.
The days are fuller than most of our weeks, so they are built to alternate: a catamaran day or a summit, then a lighter day that asks less. Boutique stays, private transfers, and the logistics kept out of your way.
From arrival to departure the arranging is ours, so the week is spent out on the island rather than on the planning.
Your first day begins the moment you land, where a private guide is waiting to bring you through to your transfer. The drive follows the coast to a small beachfront resort, the water turning from deep blue to the pale green of the lagoon as you near it.
Whatever the first afternoon holds, a swim, an hour at the spa, or nothing at all, the week starts gently, at the pace of the island.
Today is given to the water, out from Grand Baie to the islets off the north coast. The catamaran crosses to Îlot Gabriel and Flat Island, passing the sheer cliffs of Coin de Mire, with the snorkelling bringing up coral, parrotfish and the occasional ray in clear water.
On the right days, whales surface further out beyond the reef. Lunch is a barbecue served on board, and the catamaran runs back across open water through the afternoon.
Today begins in Port Louis. The morning is at Aapravasi Ghat, the UNESCO World Heritage Site where, after the abolition of slavery, indentured labourers first arrived from India and beyond, and where much of the island's story begins.
The walk then moves into the Central Market, loud with produce and spice, where lunch is street food: a dhal puri, or an alouda to cool the heat of the day. The afternoon follows the coast north through the fishing villages to the calm beaches of Mont Choisy and Pereybere.
The morning is spent on the water, a guided kayak across the lagoon to Île d'Ambre and in among the mangroves, with seabirds overhead and coral showing through the shallows.
In the afternoon a private transfer takes you south to the second stay, the coast giving way to quieter mountain roads and a wilder side of the island.
Today crosses the island to the south-west, where the land turns to forest, waterfall and old volcanic ground. The morning takes in Trou aux Cerfs, the dormant crater above Curepipe, with its long view over the plateau and out to sea.
Then Chamarel and the Seven Coloured Earths, low dunes of cooled lava, and the Black River Gorges, the road pausing at viewpoints where the valleys open towards the coast.
An early start for the guided climb of Le Morne Brabant. The path rises through endemic scrub before the lagoon and reef open out below.
The mountain is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place of deep significance: the basalt peak where runaway slaves took refuge, and now a memorial to the abolition of slavery. Your guide tells that story where it happened, at a pace set to the group.
Today is spent in the Vallée des Couleurs, a valley of forest trails, volcanic rock and waterfalls with pools clear enough for a swim. The day runs on quad bikes along rough tracks, ziplines over the treetops, and a crossing of the Nepalese bridge, the longest suspension bridge in the Indian Ocean.
Between them there are viewpoints and quiet stretches of forest, with time to take the pace down before the return to the coast.
The last morning keeps its own pace, with a final swim or a slow breakfast over the lagoon before you travel home.
Your private transfer takes you to the airport in good time, along the coast the week began on.
